As he spoke, Paul walked slowly back and forth in front of the jury box, looking directly into the eyes of each juror as he passed by. Most of them looked back at him for a short time but then turned their eyes away.
“We will also introduce medical-expert testimony that will explain to you what damage has been done to this child as a result of this inferior treatment.”
One eyebrow rose slightly for a few seconds, but Judge Davies’s face otherwise remained impassive as she listened. The opening and closing statements by the opposing attorneys did not, in themselves, require proof or testimony, and it was the time when trial attorneys got to display their flights of rhetoric and acting.
