How important do you think villains are in your story? The villains are very important. They are very reminiscent of real life terrorists and governmental agencies formed to combat them. What is scary, many readers have told me, is that the terrifying villains are so real.
What are your goals as a writer? I hope to write until the day I day. I hope to entertain my readers. I hope to make them laugh, to make them cry, to make them scared, but always to make them enjoy. That is very important to me.
Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)? I have traveled the world extensively. There are few countries that I have not visited yet. I have lived overseas on many occasions. COVERT DREAMS is set in Germany, where I have lived and visited too many times to count, and in Saudi Arabia, where I was a professor at the University of Petroleum and Minerals. DEADLY EYES is set on the lovely Caribbean island of St. Croix, where I was an English professor for four years at the University of the Virgin Islands. Yes, my world travels play a huge part in my books.
What books have most influenced your life? Every book that I have read has influenced me in one way or another. I am an avid reader, and an eclectic reader, so bits and pieces of most everything I have read have somehow had an effect on me.
What is your most cherished moment in life? I have fallen madly in love two times in my life, which is something I treasure the most. My first wife, who I love dearly and always will, passed away eight years ago. Several years later, I was fortunate enough to fall in love for a second time. My wife, Kitty, has brought love back into my life, something I once thought impossible. For that, I am the most grateful man in the world.
Can we expect any more books from you in the future? Yes, you can expect more books from me in the future. As a recently retired college professor, I now have the luxury of time to devote to three of my four favorite things: writing, reading, and world travel. The fourth, of course, is loving life and my wonderful wife.
Have you started another book yet? Yes, I am nearly finished with THE THREE KITTIES THAT SAVED MY LIFE, the true story of my very difficult journey from grieving widower to the once-again happily married and happy-to-be-alive man that I am today.
Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, I see myself traveling the world and writing books about my experiences, combining two of my lifelong passions into a hobby that I just love.
What are your current writing projects now? I am nearly finished with THE THREE KITTIES THAT SAVED MY LIFE, the true story of my very difficult journey from grieving widower to the once-again happily married and happy-to-be-alive man that I am today
What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? Make good use of your own life experiences and your creative brain. Play with language. Read as much as you can from a wide variety of writers, and be sure to enjoy what you are doing.
What contributes to making a writer successful? I believe that luck has a lot to do with it, being at the right place at the right time with the right piece of writing. There are lots of very good but relatively unknown writers out there. Becoming known, becoming a household name, receiving lots of powerful word-of-mouth recognition from readers is crucial.
Do you have any advice for writers? Be sure to write, write, and write, because that is what writers do.
Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers? If you like a writer’s work, let him or her know. As humans, we all appreciate praise.
What do you do to unwind and relax? I do a lot of reading, and I am a world traveler. I have been traveling the world since I was a youngster. I have lived in Finland, Germany, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and the Virgin Islands. In addition, my wife and I enjoy walks along the beach and in the mountains. Living in Southern California wine country also helps a lot.
What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing? I am a published author, and thousands of my eBooks and paperbacks have been purchased by readers around the world. It is amazing when I see that one of my books has just been purchased from someone in the UK or Germany or Singapore. What a thrill it gives me to think of someone I will never meet, someone in a far-off land, reading something that I have created. It is a real high!
If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be? Enjoy life, for it is short. I know this is a cliché, but it is also the truth. If you find yourself stressed or depressed, curl up with a good book. A good read can help improve any state of mind.
Is there anything else you would like to tell your readers about yourself? I was a college professor for over forty years. I taught literally throughout the world, at universities in Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and the Caribbean. I retired just over a year ago from a twenty-four year stint as an English professor at a California community college. I do miss my students, but, I must admit, I love the free time I now have to devote to three of my favorite things: reading, writing, and traveling.
